The SOC auditing structure was created due to the changing landscape of service organizations and specifically the increase in cloud based computing. The AICPA recognized the changes over the past two decades since the release of SAS70 and created the SOC framework with three reporting options: SOC 1, SOC 2 and SOC 3.
